One of our readers asked us last week:
“I have a baby red ear she is only about a year old and she had a really soft brittle shell for a awhile . I have since been treating her like the vets have said and it is getting better , but now her shell is growning very dark green moldy fuzz all over . Should i be worried? And what could I do different?”
If you asked us before, we would have said to cleaning the turtle’s shell with a soft toothbrush, but this video from Expert Village says you don’t even have to. Go figure.

Welcome to my new series, Friday Finds, where I’ll be showcasing a new turtle related product each Friday for all you turtle lovers out there. This week’s Friday Find is one that I will probably be buying for my little “pond turtle” once she’s ready for me to read books with her…
From Publishers Weekly
Falwell’s (Where’s Nicky?) combination of counting book and nature tale, in an idyllic pond setting, begins with “Ten timid turtles, lounging in a line.” These attractive Eastern Painted Turtles (identified at story’s end), with sweetly placid eyes, intricate stripes and loops of yellow and orange on their shells and bodies, appear on every spread but decrease in number with each turn of the page. Various creatures send them scuttling for cover off their log, one by one, and into the variegated blueness of the pond. First, a plump emerald bullfrog in flight reduces the group to nine; several pages later, the fluttering presence of a burnished brown butterfly knocks the number down to three. Into each spread, Falwell tucks a clue as to the next offender: in one, it’s a fawn’s spotted back, in another the feather of a chickadee floats on the pond’s surface. After all 10 turtles make their exits, they reconvene on the pond floor to “settle for the ni (more…)

Here is another event on the blog-o-sphere related to oil spill clean up. The fantastic folks at Craft Hope have partnered with The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies, the Audubon Nature Institute, and the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge to assist them in their efforts in caring for and cleaning oiled marine mammals, mostly dolphins, other marine mammals, birds, and sea turtles.
Since these creatures are naturally curious and head straight towards all the oil slick activity, they’re asking all crafters who can sew, knit or crochet to send in sets of 10 – 20 hand-crafted wash towels and/or hand rags. They are, after all, called “Craft Hope”. These towels and rags will then be used to help clean up the mammals, birds and sea turtles. No worries on sending anything fancy.
Visit their website to get all the information on how to participate in their project, but don’t tarry…the project deadline is the end of August! All of your donations can be of great help!
Not the prettiest of turtles, but they never cease to amaze me. I especially like how they lure their prey.
